RE-DRAWN, RE-DESIGNED, RE-IMAGINED FILM POSTERS

CINEMATOGRAPHICS is a project dedicated to the redesign of film posters. The history of film posters is long and fascinating — initially beginning as visual tools to promote and market movies to potential audiences, film posters have grown to become a visual medium bearing cultural significance. With the rise of digital marketing, the nature, scale and aesthetic of film posters has shifted since its origins, and this zine aims to celebrate that evolution by bringing it back to the printed format. This project draws inspiration from the themes of Matthew Chojnacki’s Alternative Movie Posters: Film Art from the Underground, the work of Mondo, AMP, and just about any of these lists on Letterboxd.

ARTIST COMPENSATION

This is a for-profit zine. Each artist will receive (at a minimum) a physical copy of the zine including international shipping. Earnings from this project will go towards zine manufacturing and shipping costs. Profits will be split between the project contributors.

WHAT FILMS ARE ALLOWED?

Any full-length feature film qualifies.

WILL RATINGS BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION?

All ratings are fair. The zine will be SFW, so the posters themselves must not contain any graphic content.

WHAT FILMS WILL BE IN THE ZINE?

That will be entirely up to the contributors, but we may open polls or contests for suggestions.

WILL YOU ACCEPT MATTE PAINTERS OR PHOTO MANIPULATORS?

Yes, but all images used MUST be fair use or original photography.

WILL ARTISTS BE RECREATING EXISTING POSTERS OR DESIGNING NEW ONES?

The premise of the zine is "reimagined" posters, so if one chooses to interpret that by recreating or drawing inspiration from an existing poster, that will be allowed, but we highly encourage original designs. The short answer: both are acceptable.

CAN CONTRIBUTORS WORK ON MULTIPLE POSTERS?

Yes! Contributors may do more than one poster, but there will only be one poster per film.

Primarily discord + email.

WILL ARTISTS BE ALLOWED TO SELL THEIR WORK AFTER THE ZINE IS COMPLETE?

Yes. Artists retain all rights to their work.

DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY (Graphics + publicity mod)

+ create graphics for promotional posts
+ experience creating gifs / motion graphics / animations is a plus
+ set up instagram and tumblr, and other accounts as needed
+ run polls, giveaways and other events
- judge contributor applications
- moderate the discord server
- answer questions
- assisting head mod to manage social media accounts
- assisting head mod with layout

PRODUCTION MANAGER (Production + shipping mod)

+ receiving, packing and shipping zines
+ managing orders
+ judge contributor applications

- assisting head mod with formatting, enforce proper printing/submission standards
